Sun Hung Kai Properties' (SHKP) Kai Shing Management Services and three developments including Park Island, Kowloon Commerce Centre (KCC) and East Point City shopping centre won honours in the first U Green awards.

The poll at the end of last year chose KCC in West Kowloon as The Most Favourite Green Building with one sixth of the votes and Park Island on Ma Wan Island The Most Favourite Residential Estate with a third of the votes in their respective categories.

A panel of judges named East Point City in Tseung Kwan O The Most Outstanding Green Shopping Centre and Kai Shing The Most Outstanding Green Property Manager based on their green initiatives, carbon-reduction achievements and environmental commitment.

The awards were presented by the widely-circulated U magazine. The judges included members of leading green groups like WWF, the Green Council and Business Environment Council and editors from the magazine.

SHKP has a well-regarded reputation and proven track record in environmental protection. It follows green principles in all aspects of its business from planning and design to construction, material sourcing, landscaping and property management. These new awards add to a string of green accolades that SHKP has won over the years.

The Most Favourite Residential Estate: Park Island

Park Island was one of SHKP's pioneer green properties. The estate's innovative green measures produced significant results such as a 10% reduction in power consumption saving a million kWh of electricity and being named the most energy-efficient residential estate by Friends of the Earth in 2008.

The Most Favourite Green Building: KCC

SHKP achieved a new level of green excellence when its KCC became the first Hong Kong commercial development to get Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold pre-certification from the US Green Building Council in 2009. The grade-A office development has advanced eco-friendly features and measures like energy-efficient installations, CO2 sensors for air quality and recycling condensate water from the air-conditioning system.

The Most Outstanding Green Shopping Centre: East Point City

East Point City is a leading low-carbon mall. Management recycles festive decorations and has run collection programmes for used light bulbs and metal moon cake boxes to arouse public green awareness. Using energy-efficient bulbs on the mall's Christmas tree last year resulted in a 240-kilogram reduction in carbon emissions.

The Most Outstanding Green Property Manager: Kai Shing

Kai Shing is working to make Hong Kong a low-carbon society with green property-management policies. It was one of the first property managers to take part in the Environmental Protection Department's Green Hong Kong - Carbon Audit, training staff in green property management and encouraging residents to live green.
