SHKP wins fourth Eco-Business award

20/05/10

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) won a fourth consecutive Eco-Business award for its achievements in green development, and the latest honour earned it a Gold Eco-Business designation. SHKP is dedicated to environmental protection and offering the finest developments that follow green principles in building and management as part of its green policy and efforts to promote sustainable development.

Recognition of green efforts

The awards are given out by Prime magazine and the Business Environment Council to recognize green efforts. The judges were environmentalists, representatives of various chambers of commerce and academics. They evaluated candidates on green strategy, implementation and performance, green leadership and innovation. SHKP won an Eco-Business award for the fourth year running and a Gold award for its leading role in green development.

Green buildings

SHKP was the first developer in Hong Kong to incorporate environmental protection in its vertically-integrated system of property development and management to realize energy efficiency and improve the environment. Green elements are included in all aspects of business from design and planning to material sourcing, construction and landscaping. SHKP adheres to international green standards in the design and construction of its projects, which has earned widespread recognition for many of them. International Commerce Centre attained a provisional BEAM platinum certificate and Kowloon Commerce Centre was the first Hong Kong commercial development to get LEED gold pre-certification from the US Green Building Council.

Comprehensive energy conservation

SHKP applies green management through its property management subsidiaries Hong Yip and Kai Shing. The two companies work to raise environmental awareness among residents and encourage them to lower electricity consumption and save resources through a variety of programmes. Over 100 offices, shopping malls, industrial and residential buildings are in the process of or have completed carbon auditing. SHKP will continue its efforts in carbon reduction and energy efficiency as it works for a sustainable future with the people of Hong Kong.

Promoting green living

SHKP's green efforts extend to spreading eco-friendly messages to the 250,000 households in its residential estates and over 50 shopping malls. SHKP supported Earth Hour again this year. Over 150 of its developments joined the lights-out campaign, making it one of the highest-participation developers. It also sponsored the Friends of the Earth's Power Smart Contest 2009, with over 200 buildings taking part and eliminating at least  2,370 tonnes of carbon dioxide to show concern about climate change.
