100 SHKP developments recycle electronic waste

08/10/10

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) has signed up nearly 100 of its developments to the Friends of the Earth Conscientious Recycling Charter. SHKP is committed to recycling electronic waste to reduce its impact on the environment and is one of the developers with the highest participation rates. SHKP places great emphasis on environmental protection and follows green management principles in its residential and commercial buildings and collaborates with environmental groups for sustainable development.

Reducing electronic waste

SHKP’s Kai Shing Management Services and the Hong Yip Service Company won over 100 honours in the Environmental Protection Department’s Source Separation of Domestic Waste Competition, and now they are following the Conscientious Recycling Charter by collecting old electrical appliances, computers and other electronic products from residents and tenants in 100 residential and commercial developments. The waste is sent to recycling channels verified by the Environmental Protection Department such as Caritas Hong Kong, St James’ Settlement and the Chamber of Hong Kong Computer Industry, to ensure that the hazardous waste content is handled properly. Reusable computers and appliances are donated to the needy.

Effective green management needs the support of residents and tenants, so the two management companies communicate with them regularly and stage promotional and educational initiatives. Millennium City in Kwun Tong has collection points that integrate recycling and education by highlighting the impact of electronic waste and reminding tenants of proper ways to recycle. Staff also collect old computers and appliances for tenants’ convenience and to increase recycling volume.

Encouraging support for Carfree Day

SHKP again supported the Greenpeace Carfree Day by encouraging staff of its management companies and hotels to use public transport instead of driving on September 22 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
