SHKP supports Earth Hour for 11th straight year with over 300 properties taking part to conserve energy

01/04/19

Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP) joined in the worldwide Earth Hour for the 11th straight year. The Group has been one of the corporations with the highest participation by mobilizing more than 300 properties taking part in the event this year, showing its commitment to promoting healthy and sustainable living. Over the 11 years, the number of participated properties under the Group has been increased by more than two folds, including its territory-wide residential estates, shopping malls, offices and industrial buildings.

In support of Earth Hour, the World Wide Fund worldwide environmental protection campaign, SHKP showed its commitment to sustainable development by mobilizing over 300 commercial and industrial buildings, shopping malls and residential estates managed by its subsidiaries, including Hong Yip Service Co. Ltd. and Kai Shing Management Services Limited, to switch off their lights for an hour on the night of 30 March, in order to conserve energy.

The SHKP properties taking part once again in the event included the city's tallest skyscraper the International Commerce Centre (ICC), which has implemented green management and was the first building to obtain the 'BEAM Plus Existing Buildings V2.0' Platinum Certificate. Another Earth Hour participant was the Kowloon Commerce Centre (KCC), which received the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification in Hong Kong. Other major developments showing their support for this cause included the Group’s headquarters Sun Hung Kai Centre, Mikiki, which won the Hanson Outstanding Award last year in the shopping mall category at the Energy Saving Championship organized by the Environment Bureau and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, plus Landmark North and Aegean Coast, both of which received the gold award at the 2017 Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence in the Property Management categories (Commercial & Industrial) and (Residential) respectively. Grand YOHO, gold award winner in the Large-scale Domestic Property (properties below six years of age) category at the Best Landscape Award 2018 organized by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, also took part in Earth Hour.

In addition to developing premium properties and providing excellent services, SHKP puts into practice its belief in Building Homes with Heart by actively fulfilling social responsibilities while giving back to the community through optimization of its resources and networks. For example, a scheme jointly launched by SHKP and Green Power in 2011, the Love Nature Campaign combines elements of learning and appreciation with outdoor exploration. The campaign aims to encourage the younger generation to care for nature and deepen students' and the public's understanding of the environment through activities such as eco-tours and beach clean-ups. To date over 30,000 kg of waste and recyclables have been collected while more than 50 school visits and eco-tours for kindergarten and primary school students have been conducted. Last year, SHKP went further by launching Hong Kong's first free countryside and beach clean-up mobile app Nature Rescue, an information and social networking platform that mobilizes even more members of the public to participate in nature protection activities.
