SHKP enlists staff to join beach clean-ups for environmental conservation

19/11/14

Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP) strives to promote healthy and sustainable living.  Through a host of events launched under its Love Nature Campaign, the company encourages its staff and the general public to promote environmental conservation and appreciate nature.  Over 200 SHKP staff and their families and friends recently joined a beach clean-up at South Lantau Bay on Lantau Island.  They also had an opportunity to learn about the mangroves and fishing village in Tai O, as some parents explained conservation to their children in the fun-filled outing.

South Lantau Bay, the southern part of Lantau Island, has a vast natural beach and mudflat that are the habitat for a diverse community of coastal species.  The beach clean-up had SHKP staff, families and friends working together in small groups to collect and separate waste to benefit the environment.  Participants later had a guided tour and strolled through the neighbouring Tai O, a rare Hong Kong fishing village.  They were able to observe mudskippers, splendid fiddler crabs and many-petaled mangroves during the tour, which helped them better understand the importance of conserving the natural environment.

Preserving the environment is vital to sustainable development.  SHKP has organized an array of coastal clean-ups, outdoor learning events and workshops since the beginning of its Love Nature Campaign in 2011.  It has also produced a range of entertaining educational kits for over 500 primary schools in Hong Kong.  More than 2,000 SHKP volunteers, primary students and teachers have helped collect over 10,000 kg of waste in clean-ups at Ting Kok in Tai Po, Lung Kwu Tan in Tuen Mun, Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau, and Shui Hau Wan on South Lantau.

SHKP goes to great lengths to fulfill its corporate social responsibility.  Community investment concentrates on reading and holistic development, healthy and sustainable living, and care for the underprivileged.  Each aspect has specific goals and target recipients.  SHKP puts its belief in Building Homes with Heart into practice by making strategic use of its resources and networks to give back to society, with support for community investment and volunteering from senior management.

SHKP also encourages continuous learning and believes that reading enriches an individual and knowledge creates future and promotes the development of society. For example, the SHKP Reading Club was established in December 2013, offering free complimentary publications, seminars, workshops, guided tour and reading and writing related competitions to promote the appreciation and joy of reading in the community.

In addition, SHKP hopes to further promote healthy lifestyle through charity sporting activities, such as ‘SHKP Vertical Run for Charity – Race to Hong Kong ICC’. The race is the grand finale of the Vertical World Circuit (VWC), bringing international top runners to compete at the International Commerce Centre (ICC) for the World Champion title. The race offers different categories for more people to experience the joy of vertical running while contributing to charity.
